Did You Know?

The black-and-white coloration and shading of her face indicate that this painting was made to look like a colored etching.

Description

A woman looks sharply, almost surreptitiously, to one side as she pours wine from a red glass bottle. She has long and curly tresses and a green beret inspired by European styles, though she wears Indian jewelry. Images loosely based on prints that made their way to India from Europe were in vogue in Rajasthan during the 18th century.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and gold painting depicts a woman with medium skin tone facing our right. Precise, fine lines define her curly black hair and large green hat with a pink-gold border. She wears a yellow garment with layers of pearls. Her hands, stained with red pigment, hold a white vessel with a red-striped stopper. A pink floral border lines the bottom, grounding the delicately patterned, elegant portrait.
