Did You Know?

The Raja was probably in his early teens when this picture was painted.

Description

A young raja (king) rides a brown stallion, larger than the others in the center of the composition. The speed of his gallop is indicated by the flying ends of the Raja’s turban. A group of his horsemen turn their heads around to admire his glory, while another party riding behind him follow their king’s lead in obedience.
A horizontally oriented tempera painting depicts Maharaja Balwant Singh, a man with a medium-light skin tone and dark beard, riding a rearing black horse at the center of a procession. He wears a white tunic and blue turban. To our left and right, attendants with medium-light skin tones ride horses across a light green field. A dark blue sky strip and a red border with inscriptions frame the composition.
