The full moon with face evokes the dynasty’s name “Chand” or moon.

Description

A Rajput king on a nocturnal hunt points his rifle toward three boars standing amid faint tufts of grass. The raja and his two attendants sit concealed behind a hunting blind, and we see their figures through a thin white screen that blends with the mists and sands in the milky moonlight. The raja, dressed in a green jama (long belted tunic), eyes his quarry intently, nearly ready to fire a bullet, and his attendants anxiously observe.
A horizontally oriented tempera painting depicts Raja Ram Chand of Amber hunting boars. On our right, the Raja, a man with light skin tone in a green robe, kneels in a rectangular blind while aiming a rifle. Two attendants sit behind him. On our left, three dark brown boars forage across a light field. At the top center, a small white moon with a face looks down from a narrow blue sky.
