Did You Know?

The subject is wearing toe-rings on his right foot.

Description

The portrait is of a man clad in a sumptuous gold and maroon robe sitting on an armchair in a carpeted interior hung with green glass lamps. European influence is also notable in the front-facing depiction of the subject, instead of the profile-facing depiction in traditional Rajasthani portraiture. The person appears to be from a wealthy background as he wears pearl and emerald necklaces and gold bracelets.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and gold painting on cotton cloth depicts Gadadhar Prasad, a man with a medium skin tone, seated facing us. He wears a long, patterned orange robe and a gold turban, holding a white cloth. Behind him are three yellow arched niches; side windows reveal green foliage. Floral sprays decorate the gray floor and green wall panel. Devanagari script is written at the bottom.
