Did You Know?

The Raja is heavily armoured for a buffalo hunt, perhaps symbolic of his financial prosperity.

Description

In an energized hunting scene, the equestrian Maharaja Ram Singh smites a running buffalo with his sword. The Maharaja is supported by a hunting party, who carry various objects for the Rajput king’s vanity, including additional swords, a fly whisk, a parasol, and a canopy.
A horizontally oriented tempera painting depicts Maharao Ram Singh II, a man with a medium-light skin tone and golden halo, atop a brown horse leaping toward a dark buffalo. On our left, a man on foot assists. From our right, six similarly skin-toned men carry a black shield, flywhisk, spear, and white umbrella. Green hills sit under a gray sky, framed by red and blue borders with gold script at the top edge.
