Areas of white indicate places where Ruknuddin made corrections; the king’s right foot, for example.

Description

Ruknuddin is one of the most celebrated artists of the Bikaner painting atelier. His exquisite mastery of brushwork and portraiture can be noted even in the spontaneity of an informal study. From the same illustrious family of Bikaner artists, he was a second cousin of Nur Muhammad, who created the portrait drawing of Maharaja Rai Singh of Bikaner (1987.1100).
A vertically oriented ink and gum tempera painting depicts Maharaja Anup Singh, a man with a light skin tone, seated on a terrace facing left. He wears a white robe and turban, leaning against a large bolster. Before him stands a courtier in a yellow shawl with hands clasped. Muted lines suggest a building, trees, and swirling clouds. Persian script runs across the top, framed by a wide, reddish-tan border.
