Description

The glowing hues and exquisite treatment of the figures and vegetation transport the viewer to the mythic realm of the Hindu god Krishna. Nanda, the lead elder of the cowherder village, sits amid the village council, larger than the others. After witnessing the divine and superhuman activities of Krishna, the cowherders approached Nanda and asked him for an explanation.
A horizontally oriented gum tempera and silver painting depicts a riverside landscape within an orange border. In the lower half, pink lotuses float in a silver-gray river. Above, on a grassy bank, Nanda and eight light-skinned men sit beneath large green trees, with a herd of white, pink, and tan cows to our left. In the background, white buildings sit on a hill beneath a flat yellow sky in the upper half.
