The flowering plants on the ground echo the lush vegetation of the Qur'anic paradise.

Description

Following the model of formal imperial Mughal court portraiture, the artist has lavished care on shading the face of a royal woman and the distinctive qualities of her luxurious textiles. Details have been exquisitely rendered, including the fringe of her pink shawl with its lotus vine border and the sprigs of flowers tucked in her hair.
A vertically oriented tempera painting with gold accents depicts a woman with a medium-light skin tone in profile, facing left. She wears patterned orange trousers beneath a diaphanous gray robe and a draped pink shawl. Adorned with jewelry, she holds a delicate flower sprig aloft. She stands upon a verdant mound amidst wildflowers. Above, the dark sky transitions to a warm orange horizon, where soft, gray-white clouds drift across the scene.
