Description

The festival of Teej is celebrated primarily by women in northern India and Nepal. The women sing and dance to welcome the monsoon season and observe fasts for the long life of their husbands. In the painting, two women can be seen playfully swinging on a tree branch while a group of women cheer for them.
A vertically oriented gum tempera painting depicts Maharaja Abhai Singh, a man with light skin tone, on a white horse on our right, accompanied by men. He watches two women with light skin tones on a swing suspended from a tree on our left. Below, groups of women with light skin tones in colorful skirts stand against a dark green, gold-patterned landscape. Gray water with figures and a shrine lines the bottom.
