Did You Know?

An Islamic town characterized by domes can be seen in the diminishing background.

Description

A man’s lifeless body is being observed by a group of women. A kneeling woman with a halo and wearing fine garments is Shirin, the beloved of the dead man, Farhad. Farhad cut a canal of milk through a mountain pass as a proof of his love, but on hearing the false news of her demise, he jumped off the mountain and killed himself.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and gold painting depicts figures in a landscape. In the middle ground, Farhad, a man with light skin tone, lies prone near a stream. Shirin, wearing a golden halo, sits among four attendants, all with light skin tones. In the yellow foreground, a saddled blue horse and a deer face right. Jagged brown mountains and a distant town under a pale sky fill the background.
