Did You Know?

Fitz Henry Lane made this print while working at the shop of the Boston lithographer Pendleton, who issued it by subscription to the public.

Description

This print depicts the harbor of Gloucester, where Fitz Henry Lane was born. A center for fishing, the town is depicted here as centered on a body of water punctuated by various ships. Lane was known as an early proponent of Luminism, an artistic style that focused on precise depiction of light and atmospheric effects, such as the dramatic sunlight seen through the clouds and on the water’s surface here.
A horizontally oriented lithograph in shades of gray with fine linework depicts a panoramic harbor view of Gloucester, Massachusetts. In the foreground, rocky terrain rises on the left while wooden structures line a sandy shore to the right. Numerous sailing vessels dot the water in the middle ground. A distant town with church spires sits beneath a dramatic sky filled with voluminous, billowing clouds and beams of light on the left.
