Did You Know?

The god Mars in Roman mythology is also a warrior.

Description

This page is from a series of paintings featuring astrological subjects, including personifications of planets and signs of the zodiac. Historically in India, the auspicious conjunction of planets with certain calendar dates was important for determining when to schedule events or ceremonies. Mars is depicted as a warrior with green skin and riding a tiger through the sky.
A vertically oriented gum tempera and gold painting depicts Mars, a green-skinned deity with four arms, riding a leaping tiger. Set within a light blue oval, Mars wears a gold crown and halo, brandishing a curved sword, shield, and gold club. The orange tiger lunges toward our left with an open mouth. Ornate floral borders on yellow and black backgrounds frame the scene, all set within a textured pink outer margin.
