Did You Know?

Originally from a different kylix, this handle tip was used in a modern repair.

Description

Although very similar to the ancient handle tip that it was used to replace, the drill holes in this fragment suggest that it was attached in modern times (before 1915). It was removed during an extensive conservation treatment in 1990.
A ceramic fragment consists of a U-shaped tube curving forward, its exterior coated in a smooth, dark gray glaze. The inner surface and severed ends reveal warm orange-brown clay. The object is split in two by a jagged central crack, where two small holes pierce the glazed surface. Blotchy orange patches appear where the dark glaze has worn away. Both ends terminate in rough breaks exposing the grainy clay interior.
