Did You Know?

The rise of photography coincided with the creation of the railroads and the modernization of France.

Description

Edouard Baldus, the most important French 19th-century architectural photographer, here reveals the process of constructing a bridge. In 1861 he was commissioned by the railway company that owned the principal route across southwest France to document the region’s landscape, towns, monuments, and railroad structures such as bridges and viaducts.
An albumen print on a horizontal mount depicts a railway bridge under construction, stone piers and timber scaffolding rising from a central pool. Dark reflections ripple beneath the framework, while a long pipe extends from the left. Rugged, muddy ground fills the foreground, and low structures line the horizon beneath a pale sky. French text in the margins identifies the site as "PONT DE L'ARAN" and dates the scene to July 21, 1861.
