Did You Know?

Roses are a traditional symbol of beauty and its ephemerality.

Description

James Arthur created this photograph as art, a radical concept for a photograph at the time. He indicates that elevated status by signing and dating it like a painting. The young woman cradling the roses—which still have their thorns—calls upon traditional art historical and literary allegories of the transitory nature of beauty and youth.
A vertical oval gelatin silver print depicts a young woman with a light skin tone, her head tilted down with eyes downcast toward a cluster of roses held in her arms. Her brown hair is parted in the center and pulled back. She wears a light-colored dress with a ruffled neckline. Decorative metal floral ornaments are attached to the glass edges on our left and right. The image features warm brown and cream tones.
