Did You Know?

Like many early photographers, Edouard Baldus began as a painter.

Description

Baldus took up photography in the 1840s and became renowned for his architectural views. In 1854, he was commissioned to record construction of the New Louvre, Emperor Napoleon III’s project to build wings that would join the Louvre and Tuileries Palaces and create a vast courtyard.
A vertically oriented albumen print in sepia tones depicts a long, ornate facade receding into the background right. A tall pavilion featuring statues shadowed within deep niches and a steep roof anchors the foreground left. Repeating rows of rectangular windows and complex carvings texture the stone, creating a rhythmic pattern. A line of street lamps follows the sidewalk beside an empty road. "E. Baldus" is signed in the lower right corner, with "14" centered below.
