Did You Know?

French poet and critic Charles Baudelaire, who wrote scathingly about photography, was nonetheless close friends with the famed photographer Nadar.

Description

Nadar made this portrait as a cabinet card. These slightly larger prints displaced cartes-de-visite in popularity around 1865. While somewhat more expensive, they were pursued nonetheless by those collecting celebrity portraits.
This vertically oriented albumen print depicts Charles Baudelaire from the waist up. A man with light skin tone, his serious gaze looks directly toward us. His receding hairline, marked by a small spot of surface damage, gives way to wavy hair above the ears. He wears a dark jacket with wide lapels over a white shirt and an oversized bow tie. Two round buttons are visible against the dark, monochromatic background of the studio portrait.
