Description

The image celebrates the d’Orléans family, who abdicated the French throne during the Revolution of 1848 and settled in England. The setting for this group portrait is Orléans House in Twickenham, where the d’Orléans hosted numerous grand social events such as the garden party that occasioned this sitting. Many of these events raised money to support monarchist and other activities in France.
A square-oriented enameled photograph features an ornate bronze metal frame with greenish oxidation and heavy patterns of swirling leaves and shells. Centered within an oval opening, a black-and-white image depicts sixteen people in dark suits and wide, light dresses posing before a brick building. On our left, a stone urn stands; on our right, stairs lead up. A statue is nestled in an alcove behind the group.
