Description

Lehmann’s drawing belongs to a pair in which the artist explored a male figure represented in his Hôtel de Ville murals. This sheet examines the relationship between drapery and the body—a traditional object of study during an artist’s training. Lehmann paid particular attention to the undulating texture and shadows formed by the folds of the robe.
A vertically oriented graphite drawing with stumping depicts a figure with a light skin tone from behind, standing with arms raised high. They wear a voluminous, floor-length robe with heavy folds and dark shadows along the sides. A faintly sketched head rests atop a high collar. The signature "Henri Lehmann" is at the bottom on our left, and the date "8 May 58" is on our right.
