Description

In preparation for executing largescale paintings, artists often produced studies of individual components of their compositions in order to work through their ideas. Lehmann made this figural study for a mural in the old Hôtel de Ville in Paris, destroyed by fire during the Commune in 1871. Here, the artist explored how to render deep shadows on the nude male body.
A vertically oriented graphite and stumping drawing on tan paper depicts a nude older male with a light skin tone, standing up. He tilts his head back, looking upward. His arms are raised with palms facing forward, and his genitalia is shown. Soft gray shading defines his full beard and muscular frame, with shadows cast across his torso and legs. A signature appears in the bottom left corner and an inscription on the right.
