Description

Hoüel’s oeuvre is dominated by images of landscapes in varied media. This ink and wash drawing portrays a scene of ordinary life in a verdant, mountainous environment. In the foreground, two men on horseback converse while others rest on a rock. On the left, the sail and rigging of a boat stalled in the harbor are visible.
A horizontally oriented ink and gray wash drawing on tan paper depicts a landscape with a sailboat on the left and rocky cliffs on the right. On the lower left, two men rest near a tall mast with unfurled sails. Toward the right, two figures on horseback and a reclining cow face steep, craggy heights crowned with dense trees. In the center middle ground, a small group stands within the light-dappled terrain.
