Description

Le Barbier’s watercolor reflects the taste for Neoclassicism in late 18th-century France. In addition to the representation of nude figures, the artist’s admiration for antique art and architecture is also seen in the statuesque group of robed women standing in the central middle ground and the classicizing round temple on the right.
A horizontally oriented pen and watercolor drawing depicts a serene river landscape. On the left bank, five women cluster beneath towering, gnarled trees; some are draped while others are nude. Within the central waterway, two nude figures are shown: one swimming toward our right and another standing near the bank. A circular classical temple crowns a distant hill on the right. Muted greens, browns, and blues define the horizontal composition.
