Description

An accomplished draftsman in eighteenth-century France, Moreau the Younger produced numerous designs for book illustrations of which this may be an example. In this scene a woman directs the hand of a man as he writes. Raising her left hand, she gestures to the solider to remain at a distance while the small dog reacts to this peculiar encounter.
A vertically oriented ink and wash drawing on cream paper depicts three people with light skin tones. On our left, a seated man looks upward, mouth agape, while a woman in a cap leans over him. To our right, a man stands with arms crossed, wearing a three-cornered hat and a sword at his hip. Below, a small dog gazes toward the trio, set against a background of draped curtains and soft washes.
