Description

In this drawing, a group of young nuns gather to pray. The unknown French artist used white chalk to delicately highlight the central figure with clasped hands. The work suggests the new style and subject matter that proliferated throughout France during the mid-19th century when an emerging middle-class audience became interested in collecting art and viewing it in exhibitions such as the Paris Salon.
A horizontally oriented, dark-toned chalk drawing on gray paper depicts seven women processing right within an arched interior. A central figure wears a dark veil over long hair and clutches a small cross. To our left, two hooded figures carry tall, lit candles. To our right, a figure holds an open book. Dramatic candlelight illuminates their solemn, downcast faces and the pleated textures of their garments amidst deep shadows.
