Description

Known for his red chalk studies of cavalry men, this work is characteristic of Parrocel’s drawn oeuvre. Casually seated at the edge of a table with his arms crossed, the man gently smirks at something he sees. His costume suggests that he is a soldier, who has discarded his hat and weapon while he rests from his arduous labor.
A vertically oriented drawing in red chalk depicts a man with light skin tone seated on a table edge. Facing right, he looks down with eyes lowered and arms crossed over a buttoned coat, collared shirt, breeches, stockings, and shoes. Darker hatching indicates shadows beneath him, anchoring the figure against the cream paper background. The vertical composition centers the man, his legs splayed with one extending toward the bottom right.
