Description

William Sidney Mount was the first major American painter of genre, or scenes of everyday life. While not directly related, the musical subject matter of two of these drawings, Tuning and Catching a Tune, brings to mind Mount's famous painting, The Power of Music, which is on view gallery 231.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on light paper depicts three figures with light skin tones. On our left, a seated man in a hat tunes a violin. In the center, another man sits on a barrel, holding a flute and looking toward a girl on our right. The girl wears a bonnet and long dress, standing with her back toward us. Handwritten text at top left reads Oct. 67 Tuning with W.S.M. at bottom right.
