Description

Constable was interested in the changing light effects of weather and often worked outdoors, making swift oil sketches on paper. He focused on painting the countryside of his native England, which he never left. He wrote to a fellow artist that he would “rather be a poor man [in England] than a rich man abroad.”
An oil painting depicts a dark landscape under a stormy sky. In the upper half, heavy gray clouds are broken by a broad, horizontal band of bright white light. In the lower half, dark green and brown hills slope toward a distant blue ridge on the horizon. In the lower right, a tiny figure in a red coat stands in the shadows. Thick brushstrokes create a hazy, atmospheric texture across the terrain.
