Did You Know?

This drawing is a preparatory sketch for United States currency, proposed during President Taft's administration.
A vertically oriented graphite drawing on tan paper depicts a muscular female figure seated on a pedestal inscribed USA. She wears a laurel-crowned helmet and a draped top with a shield ornament. Her bare midriff shows defined musculature above voluminous, folded fabric. Smooth shading creates depth across her torso and robes. Faint grid lines intersect the composition, and a ghostly outline of another figure appears to the right.
