Description

Kite-flying is a popular sport in Japan, especially during the New Year's festival. Fanciful kite forms include birds, butterflies, double fans, and portraits of heroes. Traditionally, only boys and men fly kites in Japan.
A tall woodblock print depicts a young man and child beneath willow branches. The man, facing right in tan and orange robes, holds a kite featuring a scowling figure with a bare chest. Below, a child in patterned robes reaches for a string spool. Muted brown and gray tones color the scene against beige paper. Willow leaves hang in long strands from above, and black Japanese calligraphy appears on the lower right.
