A vertically oriented oil painting depicts James G. McKinney with light skin and curled dark hair. He faces slightly left, blue eyes fixed on us, emerging from a mottled dark brown background. He wears a black coat over a white ruffled shirt and high neckcloth. Light from the left catches his face, rendered in smooth brushstrokes, while his torso is sharply defined against shadows, his firm mouth and steady gaze suggesting a sober character.
