Did You Know?

André Derain painted this view of parliament over a century ago, but you can still stand on Westminster Bridge and see the same vista.

Description

This painting is from a series of 30 London views painted by André Derain between 1906 and 1907. It exemplifies the artist’s Fauve style—characterized by intense, vivid color and energetic brushwork— that Derain developed with his friend Henri Matisse in the summer of 1905 while visiting Collioure, a fishing village in the South of France. Nicknamed the Fauves (“wild beasts”) by contemporary critics, the artists aimed for the liberation of color from reality, using it instead for compositional and expressive purposes.
