Description

Guston is known as one of the pioneers of abstract expressionism, the American 1950s art movement whose traces can be seen in the painterly quality of Tour. This painting is a prime example of the body of work Guston produced for his 1970 exhibition at Marlborough Gallery, New York, which shocked the art world with its figurative, almost cartoonlike style and hooded subjects evocative of the Ku Klux Klan. This darkly absurd series depicts the nefarious Klansmen in the midst of performing everyday activities, wryly commenting upon the ability we all possess to promote ideals either positive or gravely harmful.
