Description

Yanone (The Arrowhead) was one of the most famous plays in the Ichikawa Danjuro family repertoire. Goro, the hero of the play, sharpens arrowheads as a friend comes to wish him a happy New Year. Corny jokes and the sight of Goro in flamboyant clothing made the play very popular.
A vertically oriented color woodblock print depicts Ichikawa Ebizo III as Yanone Goro, a man with medium-light skin tone seated and leaning forward. Wearing green and cream patterned robes, he holds a large arrow with both hands against a dark whetstone in a round tub. His brow is furrowed as he looks downward. Five oversized arrows stand behind him, while black Japanese calligraphy appears at the top and sides of the composition.
