Description

Pissarro probably learned the technique of monotype from his friend Edgar Degas. Although it allowed him to work in a spontaneous and expressive way, the medium never played a significant role in his work.
A vertically oriented print in squiggly black ink strokes on beige paper depicts a town square crowded with people, a central person with a basket over their right arm stepping forward and looking to their left at another person, seen from the back, sitting in the lower left corner. Behind the central person, two small animals face each other in front of a larger crowd, some in top hats. Brief lines suggest stalls in the background.
