Description

Julian Alden Weir's painting shows the construction of the Scotland Dam, built between 1907 and 1909 on the Shetucket River near his summer home in Windham, Connecticut. The artist had a vested interest in the subject, as the dam ensured an energy supply to the area's inhabitants that included his family.
A horizontally oriented oil painting with small, textured brushstrokes looks over a dark pool toward a dam under construction. In the foreground, slender tree trunks flank the water. In the middle ground, vertical wooden posts and a smoking chimney rise to the left in a pale clearing. Muted greens and tans fill the dense foliage in the background, beneath a blue sky with a soft white cloud. A signature is bottom right.
