Description

This painting depicts the biblical story of the Supper at Emmaus, when the disguised, resurrected Christ suddenly reveals himself to two astonished disciples as they all sit down to dinner. The artist has painted the figures’ hands and the objects on the table meticulously, but leaves other details vague, including the background drapery, in order to heighten the unfolding drama.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts Christ with a light skin tone at a table with two men. Wearing a blue and red robe, Christ gazes upward with eyes wide while holding bread. To our right, an older man with light skin and a gray beard leans forward with palms open. Behind them, a man with medium-light skin looks down. Dramatic light from the left illuminates wine on a white tablecloth against dark shadows.
