Description

The motif shown here depicts the Virgin Mary and the angel Gabriel in a repeating sequence. Both figures kneel above a bed of flowers while a dove representing the Holy Ghost hovers above. The ground of this luxury silk, woven with highlights of gold thread, is now a faded blue. Its original purpose is not clear, but it may have originally been part of an altar frontal or possibly an ecclesiastical cope, or cape.
A horizontally long silk and gold thread textile fragment features three repeating scenes of the Annunciation against a muted teal background. In each scene, a winged angel with a halo kneels on our left, holding a floral staff toward the Virgin Mary on our right. Both figures have light skin tones. Above them, a bird flies downward. Stylized foliage and large birds separate the scenes, while frayed edges cut off the pattern.
