Description

In this, the fifth in Klinger’s series On Death, Part One, death occurs in a seemingly peaceful landscape. In a large meadow bordered by woods, a nanny has fallen asleep upon a bench. Beside her is a baby carriage, beneath which lies fallen bedding. On a path in the distance, toward the darkness of the forest, Death leads the child away, dead as a result of its fall.
A vertically oriented etching and aquatint depicts a central scene within a decorative border. Inside, a woman sits sleeping on a bench beside a baby carriage. To the right, a path winds away past a body of water toward a distant figure. Flanking the image are two standing women, while a radiant sun rises through tall grasses along the bottom edge of the ornate frame.
