Did You Know?

The right edge of this textile features a repeating row of wild mulberries and flowers.

Description

Green, yellow, red, blue, and white woolen threads were woven to create the instantly recognizable Kashmiri teardrop flower patterns on this shawl border. Such a work was part of a larger textile, which would have entranced the viewer with its complexity and vibrancy, especially as it moved with the wearer and contrasted with other articles of clothing.
A horizontally oriented woven textile fragment features four large, curved motifs leaning right against a mustard-yellow ground. Each teardrop-shaped form is densely filled with intricate red, navy, and green floral patterns. Below these, repeating floral sprays and small vessel-like forms decorate the base. Narrow borders featuring minute repeating flowers frame the top, bottom, and right edge. The composition exhibits a rhythmic repetition of traditional foliate patterns in vibrant, contrasting colors.
