Description

In his youth, Bellows loved to play baseball and basketball, but as he aged his preference for physical recreation shifted to tennis, a sport deemed particularly apt for a gentleman of his increased social standing. Indeed, a degree of prestige accompanied tennis during the early 20th century, as it was typically played at exclusive private clubs.
A horizontally oriented lithograph in black ink depicts a crowded nighttime scene at a tennis tournament. In the left foreground, a man in a dark suit leans toward a seated woman. Centrally, a figure sits on the ground. To the right, spectators with an umbrella gather near a net. In the background, arched openings of a building are packed with onlookers. Stark highlights and deep shadows define the frenetic, lamp-lit atmosphere.
