Did You Know?

George Bellows painted more than 140 portraits during his brief career.

Description

George Bellows created this work during July 1915 in Ogunquit, Maine. Because of frequent rainy weather, the artist tended to paint indoors, focusing on portraiture. The identity of the sitter in this example remains unknown.
A vertically oriented oil painting in thick brushstrokes depicts a seated boy with light skin tone turned slightly to our right. He has dark, textured hair and vibrant red lips. He wears a dark blue coat over a white, collared shirt. Hands clasped in his lap, light from our right highlights his face and fingers as he emerges from a dark, navy and gray-blue background.
