In 1899, Henry Ward Ranger established an important artist colony in Old Lyme, CT.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts a dark landscape under a tumultuous sky. Thick, textured brushstrokes of gray, white, and yellow clouds dominate the upper half, revealing slivers of bright blue. Below, a gnarled tree with brown leaves stands on the left among muted green and brown strokes. A rutted path leads from the bottom center toward the horizon, where smaller trees cluster in the right middle ground.
