Description

This portrait both testifies to Goya’s friendship with Cuervo and presents the sitter as a cutting-edge intellectual. Director of the Royal Academy of San Fernando, the official academy for artists and architects in Spain, Cuervo appears with his plan for the recent renovation of Madrid’s Church of Santiago. The jacket with red and gold brocade identifies him as a member of the academy.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a man with light skin tone seated turned slightly to our right at a table an architectural plan hangs over. He looks at us, with short, wispy hair and lips slightly parted. He wears a black, collared jacket fringed with gold-thread pattern, sharply defined against the solid, dark gray background. His right hand, veins showing in the painting's thick, layered brushstrokes, holds an architectural compass.
