Description

Three of the four pictures in the series depict episodes from the life of the Old Testament figure of Abraham, beginning with the angels appearing to Abraham. According to Genesis 18, Abraham met three men at midday, and, recognizing that they were angels, humbly bowed down to them with his face touching the ground. The encounter incongruously takes place before a marble, classical portico in which a woman lurks, presumably his wife Sarah.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts Abraham and three angels with light skin tones. On our left, bearded Abraham wears a turban and leans toward a white cloth-covered table. Three angels sit; the central figure with feathered wings points toward a woman peering from a doorway on our right while a dog waits in the lower left. Broad, loose brushwork in muted blues and browns renders the scene under an overarching tree.
