Did You Know?

In this text, enlightened teachers are called "True Friends" (kalyanamitra).

Description

According to the text, the exemplary youth Sudhana was inspired to seek enlightenment after hearing the teachings of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. Manjushri sent him to find a teacher, who explained one aspect of reaching enlightenment, and who, in turn, sent him to find another, and on until he heard the teachings of 52 teachers and reached his goal.
A horizontally oriented palm leaf folio of muted tan is inked with three rectangular blocks of dense black script. Two circular binding holes puncture the center, separating rows of uniform characters. The leaf's ends are slightly rounded with visible wear along the edges. In the far margins sit small symbols, while the script's repetitive, horizontal rows create a rhythmic texture across the natural, aged surface.
