Description

Around the time this portrait of writer and newspaper editor William Leete Stone was created, he was named the first superintended of public schools in New York City. Throughout his life he passionately advocated for the abolition of slavery in the United States.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts a man with light skin tone seated behind a green table. He looks up toward our left, dark hair framing his face. He wears a heavy brown coat over a voluminous white neck cloth, set against a shadowy background. His right hand holds a white quill over sheets of paper, as if caught mid-thought. Light highlights his features, sharply defined against the dark background.
