Description

A destitute Brahman peers into an open pit. At the bottom, he sees a beautiful woman and her elderly lover, who has stoked the fire beneath the cauldron for nearly eighty years. She gives the Brahman two gold bracelets, which he holds in each hand. The pit is represented in cross-section, allowing the viewers to see the action inside.
A vertically oriented manuscript page features six lines of Persian calligraphy in the upper half and a painting below. A man peers over a tan ridge into a green-brick pit. Inside, a woman in orange sits on an elevated platform on our left, while an older man crouches near a pot over a fire below. To the right, a lush tree and stone steps stand against a deep blue background.
