Description

Weenix lived in Rome for five years and painted Italianate landscapes, rather than local, Dutch subjects. The bright light, classical architecture, and exotic-looking garb of the figures all speak to this interest in foreign landscape.
A horizontally oriented oil painting depicts hunters and livestock near stone ruins. On our right, two columns support a carved beam. In the foreground, a man with light skin tone sits holding a bird. To our left, another man with light skin tone wearing a feathered hat sits on a white horse. Dogs, sheep, and a woman milking a cow gather under a hazy sky with a distant obelisk and water.
