Description

Callot's etching shows the appearance of the garden at the ducal palace at Nancy in 1625. Female figures carrying baskets on their heads are pictured so that Bellange's etchings of gardeners balancing ornate, fanciful containers must have been based on reality.
A horizontally oriented etching in fine black ink on beige paper depicts a vast formal garden crowded with people with light skin tones in seventeenth-century clothing. In the foreground, two figures play a ball game. Intricate swirling patterns fill rectangular garden beds leading toward rolling hills. At the right, a multistory stone palace stands tall. A decorative crest cuts into the upper center, and French text borders the bottom edge.
