Description

In a story of virtuous leadership and wise government, the Roman commander Scipio Africanus the Elder appears after his stunning conquest of New Carthage in Spain in 209 BC. Standing above the crowd, he returns his victor’s reward--a beautiful young woman--to her husband.
A vertically oriented oil painting depicts Scipio, a man with light skin tone in green armor and a billowing red cloak, standing on a platform. He extends his right arm toward a woman kneeling on our left, bowing her head in a white and blue dress. At right, figures with light skin tones handle ornate gold vessels. Behind, a classical temple with tall columns and a large tree frame the background under a cloudy sky.
